Daytona Beach, FL – A registered nurse and a certified nursing assistant living in Volusia County are temporarily barred from seeing patients after one of them admitted to being on drugs during her shift and the other admitted to sexually assaulting patients while on the clock.
Denise Carpenter – a registered nurse living in Deltona – and Joel Maldonado – a certified nursing assistant living in Daytona Beach – had emergency restriction orders filed against them Wednesday by the Florida Department of Health.
According to Carpenter’s order – which you can read in full by clicking here – she admitted to abandoning a patient during a shift last December while working for Maxim Healthcare Service in Port Orange.
In the order, Carpenter told one of her bosses afterwards that she was intoxicated at the time she abandoned the patient and admitted to abusing both alcohol and opioids, including heroin, oxycodone, fentanyl and suboxone.
The order was filed after Carpenter refused to comply with a doctor’s order to go into outpatient therapy, according to FDOH.
Maldonado admitted to touching the private parts of 3 elderly women while working in the Memory Care Unit at Grace Manor in Port Orange because he was “sexually aroused”, according to his order.
Among his alleged victims were a 100-year-old woman with memory problems, an 85-year-old woman with dementia and a 79-year-old woman with dementia.
The alleged incidents took place between September 2014 and February 2015.
Maldonado’s order – which you can read in full by clicking here – bars him from working with any female patients. It does not mention if he’ll be facing any criminal charges.
Carpenter and Maldonado are eligible to have a hearing before the FDOH takes final action on their respective licenses.
