Daytona Beach, FL – The home team finished strong at the 2015 Nautica United States Lifesaving Association National Lifeguard Championships in Daytona Beach.
Volusia County came in 3rd place out of 55 teams during the 4-day event, which ended Saturday on the sands in front of the Daytona Beach Hilton Oceanfront Resort.
Thousands of people from all over the country competed during those 4 days, with some coming from as far away as Hawaii.
Volusia lifeguard Mallory Kennedy took home 5 first-place medals in her age group and also won the open women’s board race with Hallie Petersohn.
Carrie Purdy, Kimberly Murphy and Volusia County Beach Safety Captain Tammy Marris all won at least 3 medals for Volusia during the event. VCBS lifeguard supervisor AJ Miller and lifeguards Rob Wallace and Alan Holt finished in the top 3 in 3 different events.
Darius DeBarros scored an upset win in the beach flags competition for Volusia while Volusia County Manager Jim Dinneen took home first place in his age group during the 2K Beach Run.
Daytona Beach businessman Charlie Lydecker won 3 first-place medals while competing for Smith Point, New York.
Los Angeles County won the overall competition for the 41st time since 1970, with Monmouth County, New Jersey finishing a close second.
Volusia County hosted the national competitions in 1982, 1996 and 2004. The county will host again in 2017.
