Daytona Beach, FL – Two women have been charged with animal cruelty after police found three dogs locked in a hot car in the parking lot of the Volusia Mall Tuesday. The discovery was made around 1 PM on a day that was in the 90’s. The temperature inside the vehicle was 100 degrees plus. The vehicle’s windows were down about three inches. Police on the scene say there was no shade and no water for the animals which were “panting heavily” when they were found according to officers.
One dog was seen trying to lick the condensation from the outside of a soda bottle inside the vehicle.
Police say the suspects told them they didn’t know it was illegal to leave animals in a hot vehicle because they are not from Florida. The vehicle had Iowa tags.
21-year-old Tiffany Hon and 22-year-old Jaclyn Campbell are charged with three counts of animal cruelty. Both listed a New Smyrna Beach address and one of them told police they had only been here for 10 days.
