Volusia County, FL-As TS Erika churns through the Caribbean, County Beach Safety officers are prepping the beach here for whatever happens. Beach Safety Captain Aaron Jenkins says over the next few days VCBS will secure non-essential towers off the beach, shuffle traffic signs off the beach to the nearest approaches, secure toll booths off the beach as needed and secure on site equipment at various stations.
Jenkins says all vehicles and Jet-Skis will be gassed up and have spare gas cans. Portable generators will be fueled and started in case they’re needed.
VCBS personnel will prepare for possible extended closures to beach driving and bather closure which will be decided by conditions.
VCBS personnel are cross-trained and are also law enforcement officers and EMT’s and can be used in various roles acros the county if a major event like a hurricane happens.
