Daytona Beach, FL – The remnants of Erika helped give Volusia County an above average amount of rain last month.

The National Weather Service reports that 7.52 inches of rain fell at Daytona Beach International Airport in August 2015. That’s 1.12 inches over the historical August average of 6.40 inches.

NWS Melbourne Meteorologist Bob Wimmer says that Erika’s path through the Gulf of Mexico after it lost Tropical Storm status pulled up moisture that dumped 2.21 inches of rain in Volusia for the final 3 days of August.

“It’s those last 3 days that pushed everything up,” Wimmer added.

August 29th alone saw 1.21 inches of rain, tying it with August 1st for the most rainfall in a day that month. August 8th’s total of 1.18 inches was the only other day with rainfall totals above an inch.

August 2015’s total rainfall amount was well below the county record of 19.89 inches in 1953. The record low for August in Volusia was 2.01 inches in 1963.

NWS still needs to measure data from other Volusia reporting sites before releasing its monthly report, but the DBIA site is the only official one in the county that’s monitored regularly by NWS.

Wimmer says early indicators are that the rainfall in August was pretty uniform throughout Volusia, with no one area getting significantly more rainfall than another.

The average temperature high was 90 degrees in August 2015, just below the long-term average of 89.6. August 2014 came in at 91.5 degrees.

Volusia’s average low last month was 74.1 degrees, just above the long-term average of 73.4.
