DeLand, FL-To mark the 14th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, 2001, Stetson University has planned a Day of Service as well as several ceremonies, which are all open to the public. The events will be held to honor and memorialize the 3,000 people who died that day in New York, Washington, D.C. and Pennsylvania. The day will start with an opening ceremony at 8am, around the flagpole on the west side of Elizabeth Hall (421 North Woodland Boulevard in DeLand). This ceremony will feature remarks by not only Stetson University President Wendy B. Libby, but also several Jewish, Muslim, Christian and secular community leaders. It will conclude with a speech by Veronica Hernandez, Stetson’s Community Partner Coordinator who is in charge of the day’s events.
Hernandez will give an overview of the day’s schedule, and will also issue a Call to Action to honor and serve all who were affected by the attacks. Afterwards, several service projects will begin, both on and off campus. From 9am to 10am, thank-you gifts will be made for local first responders. From 10am to 11am, letters will be written to deployed troops for Operation Gratitude. From 11am to Noon, the thank-you gifts made earlier for local first responders will be delivered at their jobs. At noon, a discussion about the positive benefits of volunteer work will be held at Allen Hall (508 North Woodland Boulevard in DeLand). That’s part of Stetson’s “Big Questions” dialogue series.
There will be a closing ceremony at 6pm at the flagpole on the west side of Elizabeth Hall.
