DeLand, FL-County Council Thursday greenlighted a survey to ask county residents how they feel about a proposed half-cent sales tax to pay for badly needed transportation work and, if approved, what they want the money spent on.
During the meeting, it was clear that the county is still looking for what was repeatedly called a “buy-in” from local cities. The cities are being asked to help pay for a survey company to do the work to the tune of $100,000 to $150,000 with the county paying half.
The resolution passed unanimously Thursday was only in support of the survey.
County Manager Jim Dinneen has repeatedly said the money for road work and other transportation needs will be just about gone by 2017.
County Councilmember Deb Denys drew chuckles when she observed that there weren’t enough potholes yet on local roads to move residents and politicians to do something about local transportation funding.
A proposed tax increase would still have to go before county voters.
