Deltona, FL – Investigators are on the case after a baby is found dead in a sport utility vehicle at Deltona Middle School.
The 6-month-old boy was found following a “frantic” 911 call placed just before 4pm Friday, according to Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gary Davidson.
“The baby boy apparently was inadvertently left in the vehicle all day by a teacher at the school who was caring for the child,” Davidson noted.
Deputies found the child sitting in a car seat in the back of the SUV that was left in the front parking lot of the school campus on Enterprise Road, per Davidson.
“A school resource deputy rushed to the scene 3 minutes after the call came in, but it was too late,” Davidson added. “The baby was already dead.”
VCSO’s Major Case Unit is processing the scene and will take over the investigation.
Volusia County Schools Superintendent Tom Russell released a statement to the media just after 5pm Friday. It’s posted below.
“Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and the Deltona Middle School community. This tragedy has broken the hearts of all of us in the school district. We will stand by the family with love and compassion.”
VCSO hasn’t released the identity of the victim or the teacher at this time.
Speaking to media at the scene, Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said it’s too early at this point to determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
