Astor, FL – The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the St. Johns River in the Astor area between now and 8am Sunday (September 27th).
According to the report issued at 6:22am Friday, the river is 2.8 feet higher than normal, 3/10ths of a foot above action stage. Minor flooding is occurring and additional minor flooding is forecast.
Volusia County officials say Astor may experience minor flooding to homes in low-lying areas and flooding of low-lying streets and yards from River Road northward on the Volusia County side of Astor and north of Fox Road on the Lake County side.
Docks may be covered at South Moon Fish Camp and river water could approach the sea wall at Blair’s Jungle Den Fish Camp.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is establishing temporary no-wake zones in the Astor area from State Road 40 north to the South Moon Fish Camp until at least Sunday.
“Sheriff’s deputies are deploying emergency markers designating the temporary no-wake zones and will be out in boats over the weekend to enforce the temporary regulation,” said VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson. “Officials expect to re-assess the river conditions on Monday.”
Volusia County’s Emergency Operations Center offers these tips for residents whose homes are threatened by floodwaters:
● Monitor the media for up-to-date information.
● Choose a safe area to go and prepare an evacuation plan.
● Keep insurance papers, important documents and other valuables in a safe deposit box.
● Raise household items and personal effects off the floor.
● If possible, sandbag windows and doors.
● Clear catch basins, drain covers and swales of debris.
● Put away loose items, such as trash cans, that could impede water drainage.
● Disconnect pool pumps.
● If you evacuate, turn off utilities at the main power switch and close the main gas valve.
