South Daytona, FL – Police in South Daytona say a man has been charged after he fired a shotgun in the direction of his 49-year-old mother during an argument at the apartment they share just before 2AM Tuesday.
Police went to the residence at 1620 South Palmetto Avenue (Palmetto Square Apartments) for a domestic disturbance call. The woman told them her son woke her up in her bedroom to continue an earlier argument about him not doing chores. She said he told her he wanted to show her something and then pointed a shotgun in her direction. She told police he grabbed her kitten and threw it against the wall twice yelling that he would “cut it in half and make you eat it”. He pointed the shotgun at her twice and she ran from the apartment. She told police she was in the backyard of the apartment building when he pointed the gun in her direction and fired it hitting about five feet from where she stood.
He told police he had given the shotgun to his father and no longer had it, but police found it under a vehicle parked nearby, right next to his parked vehicle.
27-year-old Stewart Butler is charged with counts including first-degree attempted murder with a firearm. He is held on no bond at Volusia County Branch Jail. An animal cruelty count is pending the kitten being checked out by a veterinarian.
