Volusia County, FL – 12 people are arrested in Volusia County during a special statewide operation aimed at keeping school zones safe.
A special Florida Sheriffs Association task force publicly released the results of a 4-week initiative known as Operation Safe Schools on Wednesday.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson says the goal of the operation – which just wrapped up – was to improve student safety and reduce pedestrian injuries from traffic violations in school zones.
“There’s no doubt that these operations make our children safer and ultimately save lives,” Johnson added.
The arrests came from directed enforcement in school zones, according to VCSO spokesman Gary Davidson.
Over 39 Florida counties – including Volusia – were involved in the operation, with state authorities issuing 9,052 warnings to motorists and 5,922 citations for school zone violations.
In Volusia, there were 226 warnings and 63 citations given during the entire operation. Of the 63 citations, 14 were handed out for passing a stopped school bus, while 2 drivers were let off with a warning.
There were no citations given to pedestrians or bicyclists in Volusia, but 48 warnings were handed out, according to VCSO.
