Daytona Beach, FL – Both sides of Interstate 95 were closed for over 3 hours after a big rig crashed and caught fire in Daytona Beach.
The accident was reported around 3:15pm Wednesday on Mile Marker 260. That’s close to where I-95 meets Interstate 4 and US 92/International Speedway Boulevard.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers on scene say that a semi carrying mop heads from Miami to Missouri crashed into a guardrail while heading northbound on I-95, coming to rest underneath the Beville Road overpass.
The driver – 32-year-old Timothy Williams of Pittsburg, Virginia – got out of the semi before it caught fire, according to FHP Sergeant Kim Montes.
No injuries were reported, but Williams was ticketed for failing to maintain a single lane.
FHP diverted southbound traffic onto I-4 and northbound traffic was detoured at State Road 44 soon after the accident.
The I-4 overpass to Beville Road was also closed for over 3 hours as engineers checked for any structural damage to the bridge as well as the road.
“450 feet of roadway has to be repaired in the northbound lanes of I-95,” Montes added. “This will take several hours.”
Northbound lanes of I-95 will now be diverted to Beville Road until the road repairs are finished. That’s expected to be complete before the morning commute on Thursday, according to FDOT spokesman Steve Olson.
Olson also added that engineers found no structural issues with the overpass.
