Ormond Beach, FL – 5 Volusia County residents are locked up and a 4-year-old boy is under the eye of the state after deputies find and dismantle a methamphetamine lab near Ormond Beach.
50-year-old Janice N. Mancini of Daytona Beach, 33-year-old Dean A. Stramondo of South Daytona, 33-year-old Nicholas O. Paone of Edgewater, 32-year-old Kennedy M. Moore of New Smyrna Beach and 23-year-old Alicia A. Rutherford of Ormond Beach were all arrested Thursday morning at Rutherford’s mobile home on Hand Avenue.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says it all started around 10:45am when deputies went to Rutherford’s mobile home to check into a report that there was a meth lab in the home and possibly a small child.
According to the incident report, a deputy on scene spotted 2 small Gatorade bottles just outside of a side door to Rutherford’s home that had soft plastic hoses coming out from under the lids left and were covered by a blanket as the bottles laid on a patch of grass.
That deputy also noticed a chemical smell coming from a window air conditioning unit on the opposite side of the home that he thought indicated a meth lab, per the report.
After 5 minutes of deputies knocking on the door, Mancini answered the door and told VCSO the only people in the home were her and Rutherford, according to the report.
Deputies said they entered the home at that point to see if a child was inside and that’s when Stramondo, Paone and Moore were spotted in 2 separate bedrooms, one of which also had Sudafed packs that VCSO thinks were used in the cooking process.
No child was found in the home, but VCSO did find out later that Rutherford’s 4-year-old son was in school and called the Department of Children and Families to investigate. DCF turned the boy over to his grandmother.
Members of the East Volusia Narcotics Task Force entered Rutherford’s home after getting a search warrant signed by a judge and that’s when officers found all kinds of ingredients used in the making of meth as well as hypodermic needles and marijuana.
4 of the 5 defendants are charged with making meth and held at Volusia County Jail on $10,000 bond. Rutherford is held on $20,000 bond as she was charged with maintaining a home for making meth.
