New Smyrna Beach, FL – Investigators are on the case after an elderly couple is found dead in the master bathroom area of a New Smyrna Beach home.
First responders found the bodies of 90-year-old Paul Berry, 89-year-old Juanita Berry and their dog Bo at their home on Club House Boulevard just after 3pm Wednesday, according to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department. That’s in the Sugar Mill Estates subdivision.
Initial reports indicate the deaths could be linked to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to NSBPD Lieutenant Shane Riggle.
“It appears that a car was accidentally or possibly left on in the garage, with the door open from the garage to the house,” Riggle noted.
NSB firefighters found “fatal levels” of carbon monoxide in the home after family members who were planning on going on a trip with the dead couple came by the home to check on them and found a “strong odor” inside, per Riggle.
Firefighters also found Bo dead in the living room, according to the incident report.
NSBPD believes these deaths are accidental but aren’t ruling out the possibility yet that this was intentional, according to Riggle.
An autopsy will likely be done on Thursday to determine the official cause of death, per Riggle.
