Daytona Beach, FL - Police in Daytona Beach have charged a 20-year-old man with trying to sell a stolen car back to its owner.
Police say the vehicle owner contacted them to report he’d gotten a phone call from someone claiming to know someone who had the vehicle. The caller offered to meet the owner who was told to bring $150 and he would get the keys and the location of the car. The car owner was told to be at the Sav-A-Lot parking lot at 288 Nova Road Friday.
Police in an unmarked vehicle watched as 20-year-old Devin Hoyt-Thayer met with the victim. When Thayer saw police approaching he ran and tried to hide in the aisle of the O’Reilly Auto Parts. He was taken into custody there. Thayer told police he had hid the keys and told officers someone paid him $10 to bring the keys to the meeting.
Thayer is charged with dealing in stolen property, felony grand theft and resisting officers without violence.
He was being held at Volusia County Branch Jail on $2500 bond.
