Orange City, FL – A DeLand man is held on $8,000 bond as detectives link him to at least 20 other burglaries to businesses in Orange City.

54-year-old Nathaniel Harris was arrested late Monday night near Enterprise Road in Orange City, according to the Orange City Police Department.

OCPD Deputy Chief Wayne Miller says a detective doing surveillance in the area spotted Harris around 11:30pm wearing dark clothing and a mask over his face that matched the suspect in the other recent burglaries, all of them in and around the US 17-92 corridor.

“He appeared to be casing the area going business to business, looking through storefront windows,” Miller noted. “Based on the above surveillance, additional officers from the Orange City Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area.”

According to Miller, Harris broke into the “Hair Ku for You” salon as officers set up a perimeter around the Orange City Town Center Shopping Plaza.

“Harris smashed the front glass door to [the] salon,” Miller added. “Officers approached Harris’ location at the front of the closed business and upon sight of the officers he immediately attempted to flee the area on foot towards Enterprise Road.”

Officers caught Harris after a brief chase and charged him with burglary, criminal mischief and resisting arrest with violence.

Harris remains in custody at Volusia County Jail as of 7pm Tuesday.

VCJ records show Harris has been booked there 5 other times since September 2003. The charges in those arrests weren’t made available on VCJ’s website.
