Daytona Beach, FL – The Daytona Beach Police Department is a step away from having enough body cameras for all of its patrol officers.
Daytona Beach commissioners are expected to discuss a resolution to buy 50 more cameras for the police department when they meet Wednesday night at City Hall. The meeting starts at 6 o’clock.
If that resolution passes, those 50 cameras would be enough to make sure all officers who work the streets are equipped with one. That’s according to Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood during a recent interview on WNDB’s Marc Bernier Show.
Currently, DBPD has 100 body cameras available for its officers.
The cameras being purchased are the Taser model from Axon Flex, the same ones that DBPD has been purchasing since implementing the program.
The nearly $96,000 purchase includes mounting kits for each camera and 9 docking stations when the cameras aren’t being used or when officers need to download the video after their shift is finished. It also includes a 5-year warranty.
The Axon Flex Taser is one of the 2 body camera types currently being tested by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office as it explores body cameras for its deputies.
VCSO is scheduled to wrap up a 2-month long trial run on those cameras at the end of the month.
