DeLand, FL – An announcement is expected Wednesday afternoon on the case of the man who was shot and killed by a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy earlier this year.
State Attorney RJ Larizza will hold a press conference at 4:30pm at the Volusia County Courthouse, according to Larizza spokesman Spencer Hathaway.
“The press conference concerns the deputy-involved shooting of Derek Cruice by Volusia County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd Raible,” Hathaway added.
The 26-year-old Cruice was shot in the face by Raible on March 4th at his Maybrook Drive home in Deltona as investigators were attempting to serve a search warrant. He died later on at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City.
Raible’s shot came after 1 of the 6 people inside the home moved towards a deputy entering the residence, according to VCSO.
Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson came out publicly to defend Raible after several public protests were held, including making an unscheduled appearance the following day at a Volusia County Council meeting.
VCSO officials said afterward that investigators found 17 grams of marijuana, a scale, a drug ledger, marijuana smoking pipes, plastic bags and about $3,000 in cash in Cruice’s home.
Raible – a 10-year VCSO veteran – was placed on paid leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting.
