Daytona Beach, FL – A Daytona Beach man is behind bars for breaking a baby boy’s leg earlier this month and then neglecting to get the baby to the hospital until he developed a fever.
28-year-old Raymond C. Scott was booked at Volusia County Jail around 8pm Monday and remains under a $5,000 bond on a felony child abuse charge as of 7pm Tuesday.
The Daytona Beach Police Department says a Department of Children & Families investigator tipped them off to the situation on October 15th, 12 days after the 6-month-old boy went to Florida Memorial Hospital for treatment.
According to the arrest report, the baby had developed a fever when he arrived at the hospital on October 3rd and it was at that point when a doctor noticed that something was wrong with the baby’s right leg.
Tests showed the right femur was broken, requiring the baby to need surgery and a leg cast to have the bone properly set in place, per the report. The baby left the hospital the day after the surgery.
4 days after the DCF investigator notified DBPD, investigators say they interviewed a 4-year-old girl living at Scott’s East Millard Court home and she told investigators that “Daddy Ray” had hurt the baby.
An unidentified person who had taken the baby to the hospital told DBPD that Scott normally takes care of the baby at night and that person denied knowing that the baby was in pain or injured for several days before showing up at the hospital.
Part of Scott’s answers to DBPD were redacted, but the report does indicate that the break came while Scott tried to change the baby’s diaper and that Scott kept quiet even after noticing that the baby was unable to move his leg.
Scott told DBPD he had made up a story about kicking the child while he was in a swing and also made up a story about the baby falling out of bed because he knew he would be in trouble, per the report.
The report also notes Scott saying to police that the baby cried a lot and he would get frustrated and walk away from the baby when that happened.
