Edgewater, FL-After a recent fatal fire, Edgewater Fire and the American Red Cross teamed up Saturday to install free smoke detectors for residents at Eastern Shore Mobile Home Park.

The fire killed one person in the home at 12 Camino Real Drive on the afternoon of October 28.

The smoke detector sweep was part of a nationwide American Red Cross effort to reduce fire deaths and injuries by 25% in five years.

Over a dozen Red Cross volunteers, many students from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and ten Edgewater Fire Rescue firefighters went door to door through the entire park to ensure each residence had at least one working smoke alarm. While firefighters installed alarms, the students and volunteers spoke to the residents about home fire safety.

A total of sixty smoke alarms were installed during the nearly four-hour event.
