Daytona Beach, FL – The movement against uniforms for public school students in Volusia County has gone online.
A petition filed on the Care2 Petitions website Wednesday night achieved its goal of 1,000 signatures as of 9:30pm Thursday, 24 hours after it was created.
Cyndi Bailey – the filer of that petition and the mother of a Volusia County Schools middle school student – wrote that those who are against the Volusia County School Board’s desire to implement uniforms starting next school year have to stand together now to make sure it doesn’t happen.
“We need to unite so our voices are heard by the school board,” Bailey stated. “Our children do not need uniforms to succeed in school. They need to concentrate on more important issues such as excessive testing and giving teachers more of a voice in developing learning plans.”
School Board members gave the go-ahead during Tuesday’s meeting for staff to hammer out a policy that the board will consider when they meet again in December.
Bailey – an Edgewater resident – added that she decided to create the petition on her own following that meeting and that she’s a little surprised how much attention it’s gotten since she posted it.
