New Smyrna Beach, FL – No injuries are reported after firefighters say flames accidentally spread from the fireplace of a New Smyrna Beach home into the attic.
Around $10,000 in damage was done to the home at 317 Sheldon Street early Sunday morning, according to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
NSBFD Lieutenant Mike Greene says the call for help came in around 8:45am and that the fire was contained within minutes, sparing the home from major damage.
“First arriving units reported heavy smoke coming from the attic space,” Greene added. “Firefighters had to cut through the vent gable to make access to the smoldering fire.”
NSBFD believes the homeowner started a fire in the fireplace and the flames spread into the attic through an opening in the chimney.
Red Cross officials were called to the scene to assist the family.
