DeLand, FL- A beach wheelchair pilot program is on the agenda when Volusia County Council meets Thursday in DeLand. The possible future expansion of the program is also laid out in the agenda item.

The pilot program includes the purchase of two beach wheelchairs to be placed at the New Smyrna Beach Lifeguard Station at 207 Buenos Aires Avenue. That’s near Flagler Avenue. According to the agenda item, those chairs were bought with funds from the Coastal Division.

Council will consider future expansion of the program to include beach wheelchairs at locations along the beach in Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores and Ponce Inlet.

Beachgoers can contact a lifeguard station or a nearby tower to inquire about the chair availability according to the agenda item. Use of the chair is free. Information would also be available on the county’s beach application for Apple and Android devices. According to the agenda item, chairs cannot be reserved in advance. The rules under consideration require a photo id to use the chair which will be held while the chair is in use.

Council meets at 9 AM Thursday in DeLand.

The wheelchair photo with this article is included in the VCC agenda item.
