New Smyrna Beach, FL – Investigators are on the case after a New Smyrna Beach man apparently drove a vehicle into the Indian River.

30-year-old Dillon C. Zettle left Volusia County Jail on $500 bond after he was charged with resisting arrest following an early Saturday morning accident near the North Causeway.

The New Smyrna Beach Police Department says Zettle refused to identify himself to officers who responded to the accident scene at North Riverside Drive near Murray Street around 2:30am Saturday.

According to the arrest report, 2 witnesses – a 28-year-old Port Orange woman and a 25-year-old New Smyrna Beach man – told NSBPD that they saw a white Volkswagon Beetle speeding south on Riverside when it sharply veered into oncoming traffic and then go off the road towards the river.

By the time the witnesses found the Beetle, it was submerged in the river and Zettle – who had a cut near his right eyelid – was wading to shore after getting out through the passenger side door, per the report.

Officers who responded to the scene say Zettle refused to tell them his name and it was while searching him following his arrest that they found his driver’s license in one of his pants pockets.

NSBPD believes no one else was in the vehicle with Zettle at the time of the crash.

More charges are pending as NSBPD considers filing driving under the influence charges against Zettle.

Members of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team responded to the scene to remove the vehicle from the river.
