DeLand, FL – An online push urging Volusia County Schools to back away from making school uniforms mandatory goes in front of the school board this week.

Cyndi Bailey – the Edgewater woman who created the petition on the Care2 website – plans to bring a hard copy of all the over 2,700 signatures gathered so far during the Volusia County School Board meeting Tuesday night.

“I started the petition to bring attention to the more important issues facing Volusia County schools,” Bailey added. “Uniforms will not help our children succeed in school. We need to focus our energy on increasing teachers’ pay and decreasing all the excessive testing of our children.”

Bailey – who is also the mother of a Volusia County middle school student – says the uniforms will force unwanted costs on families and take individuality and personality away from students.

“We have so many families in Volusia County that are on free or reduced lunches and this will add to their financial burden,” Bailey noted. “Some families do not buy new school clothes at the beginning of school year because they can’t afford that luxury and the school board will be forcing those families to purchase clothing just to get an education.”

The school board is expected to hear a presentation on the uniform policy worked out by staff during Tuesday night’s meeting.
