Deltona, FL – 3 Orlando men are in custody for stealing a mobile phone from a Deltona store and then leading deputies on a brief chase that ended on Interstate 4.

25-year-old Devauris D. Hill, 22-year-old Artavia L. Williams and 19-year-old Kyle M. Roundtree were all arrested around 11 AM Monday near Mile Marker 111 after bailing out of a maroon Pontiac once it ran over stop sticks deployed by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

It all started around 45 minutes earlier at the AT&T store on 2783 Elkcam Boulevard, according to the arrest report.

Employees called 911 for help saying that 2 men – later identified as Hill and Williams – had walked into the store and then took off running from the store after Hill snatched an iPhone 6 Plus from a display shelf despite that there was an anti-theft device attached to it.

Witnesses told VCSO that the 2 men got into a maroon Pontiac parked near the store and the vehicle drove away with Roundtree behind the wheel.

A VCSO deputy spotted the vehicle a few minutes later near the intersection of Howland Boulevard and Graves Avenue and tried to pull it over, but it was when the emergency lights were activated that the Pontiac accelerated over the center median and sped off westbound on Howland at a “high rate of speed,” per the report.

Other deputies came to assist as the Pontiac got onto I-4 westbound from Howland, with one of them dropping stop sticks on the road and puncturing 2 of the Pontiac’s tires as it drove towards Orlando.

The rapidly deflating tires forced the 3 suspects to abandon the Pontiac soon afterward and flee on foot. All of them were caught by VCSO during a search of the immediate area, per the report.

Deputies found the stolen iPhone – valued at $748 – in the vehicle.

Besides being charged with fleeing & eluding and resisting arrest, Roundtree was charged with giving deputies a false name and twisting a police dog’s nose with his hand after the dog found him hiding in a bush. According to his arrest report, Roundtree had an open arrest warrant out of Polk County.

Along with Roundtree, Williams is held without bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of principal to retail theft and resisting and officer. Williams also had an open arrest warrant out of Orange County, per his arrest report.

As of 2 PM Tuesday, Hill is held on $2,000 bond at VCJ on 2 counts of resisting an officer and felony retail theft.
