Ormond Beach, FL – Troopers finally identify a 46-year-old Miami Gardens man who died after he was run over by his own semi in Volusia County.
Roverto Lago Coureaux died at the scene around 6:20 AM Monday on US 1 at Lowndes Avenue in Ormond Beach. That’s near Airport Road.
The Florida Highway Patrol didn’t confirm Coureaux was the victim until Friday. FHP Sergeant Kim Montes says next of kin had to be formally notified first and that process took a lot longer in this particular case than it normally does because troopers had a hard time finding his next of kin.
According to the accident report, Coureaux was driving a semi north on US 1 when he decided to get out of the cab as the vehicle was in motion. That’s when troopers believe he fell onto the road and the semi ran over him.
The now-driverless semi careened into the southbound lanes, hitting a 2009 gray Chevy Malibu driven by 28-year-old Roberto Jaimes of Seville head-on.
Jaimes and a passenger in the Malibu – 42-year-old Rosalva Rivaz Rangel of Crescent City – were transported in serious condition to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused Coureaux to abandon the semi so abruptly.
Both directions of US 1 were closed for hours as troopers processed the scene.
