Daytona Beach, FL – Police are investigating after finding a handgun in a 14-year-old’s possession near a Volusia County public school.
The weapon was found near Seabreeze High School Tuesday morning, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.
The teenage boy – a 9th grader at the school – is now in custody on charges of carrying a concealed firearm. WNDB News is not identifying the teenager.
According to DBPD, a school resource officer was told around 8 AM Tuesday about a “group of males” on the back access road of the property, one of whom was possibly armed.
The incident report shows a witness – whose identity was redacted from the report – claimed she heard a gun being cocked while at the McDonald’s near the campus and was told by another person that a boy had a gun on him so he could “play” with it.
Another witness claims she saw a boy – later identified as the boy who was arrested – hiding a gun in a red fishing hat while walking past the nearby Planet Fitness.
Officers located that group of 4 boys walking near the McDonald’s and that’s when they found the teenager with an unloaded Taurus semi-automatic tucked inside a black bag he was carrying, per the report.
The report shows the gun wasn’t loaded but there was a magazine inside the bag loaded with 9-millimeter bullets. A small circular metal grinder with suspected marijuana residue was also found in the bag, per the report.
When questioned, the boy claimed the gun belonged to his mother, according to DBPD.
Officers believe the boy had the gun on him when riding the bus to school.
No one was threatened and no injuries were reported, per police.
Officials say the school was never placed on lockdown at any point.
Other charges are pending at this time against the teen.
