Daytona Beach, FL – A 25-year-old man from Daytona Beach is OK after one of his feet were bitten by a shark.
That’s the word from Volusia County Beach Safety after officers were called to the scene just before 7pm Sunday on the 200 block of South Atlantic Avenue in Daytona Beach. That’s near the International Speedway Boulevard beach approach.
VCBS Captain Tammy Marris says the victim was surfing in waist-deep water at the time.
“The shark was not seen,” Marris added. “The victim was treated and released on scene. [He] did not require transport.”
No other information is available at this time, per Marris.
This is the 4th shark bite reported this year in Volusia County and the first in Daytona Beach.
A Georgia boy was bitten last month in Daytona Beach Shores, while the first 2 happened a week apart in late May near the New Smyrna Beach jetty.
All the victims had minor injuries, per Beach Safety.
This latest shark bite came on a day where lifeguards had to deal with a couple dozen jellyfish stings reported by beachgoers as well as traffic lanes being closed in the early afternoon due to high tide and soft sand.
21 people were also rescued by Volusia lifeguards on Sunday due in part to hazardous rip current conditions.
