Daytona Beach, FL – Daytona Beach’s hot holiday season continues with yet another tied heat record, but it’s about to feel more like winter.
Wednesday’s high of 84 degrees ties the all-time record for that date (December 16th) set in 1948, according to the National Weather Service.
It’s the second time that’s happened this December in Daytona Beach. According to NWS, it also happened on December 2nd when the thermometer peaked at 84 degrees, tying the 1968 record for that date.
That mark came just days after Daytona Beach had its warmest November on record with an average of 73.4 degrees, nearly 7 degrees above normal and nearly a full degree above the old record of 72.5 degrees set in 1986.
Daytona Beach also had its warmest fall ever in 2015 with an average temperature of 76.2 degrees. The previous mark was 76 degrees set in 1998.
All that heat is helping keep Daytona Beach on track for its warmest year on record, especially considering that NWS expects December to be hotter than normal.
So far this month, Daytona Beach is running around 8 degrees above normal, according to NWS meteorologist Tony Cristaldi.
Forecasters expect Thursday to be another scorcher locally, with the projected high set for 86 degrees. If that happens, it will smash the current record of 82 set on that date in 2012.
NWS expects that Thursday should be the last day of the mercury hitting above 70 for the rest of the week. A front coming through starting Thursday night will push rain chances up to 60% as well as keep the highs in the high 60’s between then and Sunday.
NWS expects the nights to be the chilliest so far this winter, with lows plunging into the mid 40’s on Friday night.
Having said that, the heat is slated to return next week, with some days expected to have highs again in the 80’s.
