Daytona Beach, FL – A 32-year-old man recently discharged from a hospital is hit and killed by a vehicle on New Year’s Day.
The Daytona Beach Police Department says it happened around 7:20 PM on North Williamson Boulevard near the LPGA Boulevard intersection.
Witnesses claim Joseph J. Hartley Jr. was walking in the middle of the northbound lanes towards oncoming traffic, according to DBPD Sergeant James Chirco.
“A passerby stopped and attempted to see if the victim was in need of assistance,” Chirco stated. “The victim darted west across the roadway and was struck by a white Toyota Rav 4 [going] south on Williamson.”
The impact knocked Hartley into a ditch on the west side of the roadway, according to the incident report.
Paramedics took Hartley to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. That’s where he died around 30 minutes later.
Hartley had been recently released from that same hospital for an unknown medical condition, per Chirco.
Charges are pending at this time as the investigation continues.
