Pierson, FL – A 16-year-old DeLeon Springs girl is dead after collapsing on the bench in the middle of a soccer game.
Rosio Delao died at Florida Hospital DeLand around 2 hours after she collapsed at a Taylor Middle-High School junior varsity girls’ soccer match.
Paramedics and a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office deputy were called to the school campus on East Washington Avenue in Pierson around 5:15 PM Wednesday.
According to the incident report, the head coach of the team told the deputy that he substituted Delao – a sophomore – from the game after she raised her hand as a sign that she needed to come off the field.
The coach said he saw Delao take an asthma inhaler out from under her shirt and use it just before he heard a slamming sound and saw that she was lying on the ground in front of the bench.
A school employee performed CPR on Delao because she had stopped breathing and continued doing so until paramedics got on scene.
Delao had no known medical conditions other than asthma and had been complaining about shortness of breath just before she collapsed, according to what her coach told VCSO.
The school sent a recorded message to parents announcing Delao’s death the following morning, saying she died of asthma complications. Grief counselors have also been sent to help students deal with the loss.
