Daytona Beach, FL – A Daytona Beach woman is behind bars after police say she abandoned her child and then urinated on the officers who took her into custody.
34-year-old Jennifer A. Cael was arrested just after 7 PM Thursday at the Windsor Apartment on South Beach Street. She’s held on $10,500 bond at Volusia County Jail on charges of child neglect and resisting an officer as of 4 PM Friday.
The Daytona Beach Police Department says it all started when a security guard at that apartment complex called for help saying that a resident had given her child to some strangers.
According to the arrest report, that woman – since identified as Cael – told them she didn’t want her child anymore and didn’t care if the police were called out.
Responding officers found the child – whose identity, sex and age were all redacted from the report – in good health and eating a cracker in the first-floor lobby of the Windsor.
Officers got no response when they knocked on the front door of Cael’s apartment, but that’s when some of the neighbors pointed them towards another apartment at the Windsor, one that belongs to a 72-year-old man that one of the neighbors referred to as Cael’s “sugar daddy”, per the report.
DBPD says the officers initially got no response when they knocked on the man’s front door several times and it was while they were trying to free the privacy chain from the outside that a “nude [and] intoxicated” Cael came to the door.
Per the report, Cael refused to tell officers her name and punched one of them in the chest, leading to a struggle that ended with her in handcuffs. It was during that struggle when officers say she urinated on them and also knocked a pair of reading glasses from an officer’s face, causing them to break.
A Department of Children & Families worker responded to the scene and took custody of the child, according to DBPD.
When questioned, the man in the apartment – who was found by police in his underwear – claimed he didn’t know who Cael was and was “very uncooperative” with police, per the report.
No injuries were reported other than some minor scrapes to Cael’s knees.
