DeLeon Springs, FL – A toddler is airlifted to an Orlando hospital after a dog bit his head at his DeLeon Springs home.
Volusia County Animal Control is now trying to find that dog – believed to be a brown and black pit bull mix with a blue collar around its neck – following that incident around 5 o’clock Friday afternoon at a home on the 4900 block of Commerce Avenue.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says 18-month-old Ryder Hunter was playing in the backyard when the dog attacked him without provocation and then ran off.
The boy’s mother told VCSO the dog appears to be homeless and has been wandering in and out of the backyard for the past month, but she did admit that she’s been giving the dog food and water.
The boy had several cuts to the top left side of his scalp and near his left eye, according to the incident report.
Firefighters and paramedics treated the boy on scene before he was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital.
Residents in the area are encouraged to call Volusia County Animal Control if they see the dog so that it can be taken into quarantine.
