Orange City, FL – A Tennessee man is held on $110,000 bond after deputies say he held a knife to a woman’s throat while trying to take her sport utility vehicle.
42-year-old Kevin J. Miller of Knoxville was arrested just after 3 AM Saturday at a home on West New York Avenue in Orange City.
Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Andrew Gant says it all started when Miller, the woman and her boyfriend met earlier that night at the Oyster Bar in Orange City.
“The victims said Miller approached them and asked for a ride home,” Gant noted. “They agreed. The female victim drove, with her boyfriend in the passenger seat and Miller in the back. Once on the road, though, Miller wasn’t sure where he needed to go.”
The woman told VCSO she decided at that point to go to a friend’s house and that was when Miller took out a pocket knife, held it against her throat and ordered her to keep driving, per Gant.
“The victim screamed, put the 2010 Honda SUV in park and jumped out,” Gant added. “Miller started to climb into the driver’s seat – knife still in hand – and the victim’s boyfriend tried but failed to grab the key out of the ignition. Miller swung the knife at him.”
Armed with his own pocket knife, the woman’s boyfriend got out of the car and used it to slash 2 of the SUV’s tires as Miller drove away, according to deputies.
“Miller didn’t get more than 50 yards,” Gant said. “The victim was running after him and caught up with Miller as he climbed out of the disabled SUV. The victim grabbed a large stick and used it to keep Miller in the front yard of 1281 West New York until deputies arrived.”
When questioned, Miller denied any sort of altercation, but he was arrested by VCSO after deputies spoke to witnesses as well as the victims.
“He had the silver pocket knife clipped to his right front pocket when a deputy checked him for weapons,” Gant stated.
Miller’s charged with carjacking, grand theft auto and 2 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
