Daytona Beach, FL – At least 300 more volunteers are needed to help clean up the Intracoastal Waterway.
That’s the word from Volusia County officials as planning is wrapping up for the International Coastal Cleanup later this month.
Volusia County Environmental Management Volunteer Coordinator Becki O’Keefe says they’ve already received around 1,200 commitments from volunteers, but they’re hoping to get to at least 1,500 by the time volunteer registration ends on Friday.
The first 1,500 people who do volunteer at any one of the county’s 20 public cleanup sites via Volusia’s website (click here) by Friday will get a free T-shirt.
Of the 20 cleanup sites, 10 are along the river itself, while the other 10 are at beachside parks. Volunteers are most needed at the beachside parks, per O’Keefe.

There’s also another 15 private clean-up locations being targeted in Volusia during the International Coastal Cleanup.
Volunteers are asked to bring drinking water, garden gloves and buckets or used plastic shopping bags for collecting trash as well as wear proper gear for being outdoors. That includes a hat, sunscreen, comfortable clothing and outdoor footwear.
Volunteers with boats are also encouraged to bring them along to reach areas not accessible by land.
Last year’s rain-soaked effort saw 1,209 Volusia County volunteers collected 7,314 pounds of trash all along the ICW from the Halifax River in Daytona Beach south to the Indian River in New Smyrna Beach.
561,895 volunteers in 87 countries collected more than 16 million pounds of ocean-bound garbage during last year’s International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy.
