Daytona Beach, FL – Volusia and Flagler residents can expect a very wet Thursday thanks to a strong storm front coming from the south.
A Flood Watch was issued by the National Weather Service for coastal areas of both counties through early Friday.
NWS forecaster Tony Cristaldi says the storm front that’s coming in on Thursday has dumped huge amounts of rain on the Treasure Coast and he expects to see the same locally starting overnight.
“That [storm] activity has been moving on-shore from the Atlantic since the early morning hours,” Cristaldi added. “We’re expecting that activity to spread further north along the [Atlantic] coast.”
NWS is calling for around 1 to 3 inches of rainfall between now and Thursday night, with some parts possibly getting up to 6 inches of rain, especially along the Intracoastal Waterway.
Meteorologists think that amount of rain could lead to flooded streets and floods in low-lying areas or on already saturated ground.
NWS is recommending those who live in areas prone to flooding prepare for that and that drivers not drive through standing water or flooded streets whenever possible.
On top of the Flood Watch, Cristaldi says it’s possible that some areas of Volusia will get a Flood Warning between now and Thursday night, depending on how the storm front develops.
Cristaldi says it’s also possible that the Flood Watch could be extended another 12 to 24 hours, which would push it into Friday morning or evening.
