Orange City, FL – A carpet installer is out of jail after deputies think he passed out drunk in his truck while caring for 3 kids.
33-year-old John A. Bloodworth was arrested at his Orange City home around 4pm Sunday and left Volusia County Jail after posting bond on a child neglect charge.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says it all started around 3:30pm when a 30-year-old woman called asking for a well-being check at Bloodworth’s 10th Street home.
The relationship between the woman, Bloodworth and the children was redacted from the arrest report.
According to the arrest report, that woman asked another person to check on 3 children left in Bloodworth’s care after she wasn’t able to reach Bloodworth and that person found Bloodworth and the children asleep in a truck parked in the driveway.
Deputies arriving on scene knocked on Bloodworth’s front door and it was after he answered it that a 3-year-old child walked outside with no clothes on except for a T-shirt, per the report.
VCSO says Bloodworth became “agitated” and “uncooperative” when deputies questioned him and that those deputies saw watery eyes and smelled alcohol on his breath.
Deputies entered the home over Bloodworth’s objections after smelling an odor of human waste and seeing that the inside of the home appeared “unkempt and filthy”, per the report.
Bloodworth was handcuffed and placed in a squad car after he walked out of the house and physically confronted the woman and the witness while they were doing written statements, according to VCSO.
Bloodworth admitted to making “a huge mistake” and to feeling “terrible” about what happened, per the report. He also admitted to taking the kids to the park and getting them lunch earlier in the day as well as to drinking alcohol off and on since 3am.
The Department of Children & Families has been notified, per VCSO.
VCJ records show Bloodworth was previously booked in September 2003 and February 2004, but it’s unclear what he was charged with on both occasions.
