DeLand, FL – One of Volusia County’s biggest elementary schools could be getting a school resource officer.
That officer could be in place by next week, according to a contract that’s coming in front of the Volusia County School Board during Tuesday’s meeting.
The South Daytona Police Department has agreed to put an officer at South Daytona Elementary for the next 3 years during school hours thanks in part to a recently awarded grant from the United States Department of Justice.
There is an option for a 4th year, but the money to pay for that would have to come elsewhere, likely from either Volusia County Schools or the City of South Daytona.
Part of the $125,000 grant will also go towards a student safety program.
The grant is the same one the Daytona Beach Police Department used to station SRO’s at all of the city’s public school campuses starting this school year.
The VCSB would have to OK the contract on Tuesday in order for the officer to be stationed on campus beginning November 1st.
A current SDPD officer is likely to be the SRO if the contract is approved, freeing up a spot for the city to hire another officer.
