DeLand, FL - County Council chambers have seen better days and a makeover is on the agenda when Volusia County Council meets this week. Council will be asked to sign off on a renovation cost of $599,500 of the room which was originally completed in 1988.
The request for proposal sent out by Volusia County only received one qualifying bid, so council will be asked to sign off on that RFP from Hall Construction Company of Daytona Beach.
An aging audio/visual system is the original equipment installed and often causes glitches and necessitates recesses so that issues can be addressed during council meetings. The agenda item lists a half a dozen problems it says are “hindrances to public participation”. The document in the agenda shows an artist’s rendering of what the finished room will look like.
The overhaul also will improve lighting with more energy efficient LED fixtures and allow lighting control by a council member. The audio and visual improvements include new speakers, wiring and controls and four HD monitors. The dais will also be replaced and improved. Doorways on the dais will also be widened to comply with the ADA. One end will be closed off for security.
Council meetings will be moved to the Historic Courthouse for December 2015 and January 2016 for the work which is set to be done in time for the council meeting February 4, 2016.
