Daytona Beach, FL – A Mainland High School student is in custody following a police chase that started at the campus and ended at Daytona State College.

That 15-year-old male student – who will not be named by WNDB News – has been charged with felony possession of a firearm on campus after he allegedly threatened to shoot up the school.

It all started around 9:30 AM Friday at Mainland’s campus on 1255 West International Speedway Boulevard, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department charging affidavit.

Parts of the affidavit were redacted, but it shows that the teen started threatening students and staff with harm if they put their hands on him after he had a meeting with the school principal.

School officials say they asked the boy to leave the campus because he was being a disruption and he did so, but the boy returned a few minutes later and got into another argument with students and staff.

When one of the administrators ordered the boy to go to the dean’s office, the boy allegedly told him he wouldn’t and that he was going to “kill everyone in the building” with a gun if the administrator touched him.

A DBPD officer responded to the scene and gave chase when the boy took off running north from the Mainland campus, crossing West ISB through a construction zone towards the Daytona State campus.

The officer caught up with the boy in a Daytona State parking lot near Building 100 and took him into custody at that point.

Per the report, the officer found no gun on the teen after searching him, but the officer noted that the teen would’ve been able to throw the gun away at any point during the chase. A K-9 search of the area for the gun came up empty.

The report also noted that the teen is a “menace[d] to [the Mainland High] campus”, that he “continues to disrupt the everyday operation” and that his actions caused “panic and mayhem” on the campus.

An automated message from DSC was sent to students and staff notifying them of the situation.
