Edgewater, FL – A family of 5 is now homeless after fire did $5,000 in damage to a duplex in Edgewater.

Edgewater Fire & Rescue responded to the scene at 2214 India Palm Drive around 2:30 PM Tuesday.

EFR Captain Jill Danigel says no injuries were reported and that firefighters snuffed out the flames within 10 minutes of arrival.

“Crews found a small fire in what appeared to be a vacant unit,” Danigel added. “When firefighters entered, a fire was found in the living room area.”

Despite firefighters knocking out the flames quickly, there was “major damage” to the north wall of the unit and the duplex’s power supply, according to Danigel.

“The unit where the fire occurred was undergoing renovation [for] a fire at that location in July,” Danigel noted. “The electrical supply system destroyed in the fire supplied power to the other unit in the duplex.”

A family of 2 adults and 3 children – none of whom were at home when the fire broke out – are being helped out by the Red Cross while the wiring to their unit is replaced.

EFR says the cause of the fire was accidental, likely from a trash can in the vacant unit.
