DeLand, FL – A drug and alcohol rehabilitation center bearing the name of a former Major League Baseball star is about to open in Volusia County.

The grand opening celebration for the new DeLand location of the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center will be held at 4 PM Friday, with the center opening for business in January.

In a recent interview on WNDB’s Daytona’s Morning News show, Strawberry said he plans to open several more centers across the country in collaboration with Oglethorpe Incorporated, a Tampa-based healthcare management company with over 1,200 employees and 10 hospitals and treatment centers in Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Louisiana and Texas.

“Having had my own personal battles with substance abuse in the past, I understand the need for care that’s focused on treating each client with a personalized treatment plan that addresses the root cause of their disease,” Strawberry added. “That’s what individuals and professional athletes can expect to find at the Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center.”

Strawberry’s 17-year MLB career ended with 4 World Series titles with the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, but it was also marred by constant suspensions due to drug use. That’s a big reason why he says he ended up in the ministry and why he’s creating these centers following his retirement from baseball.

“My own path was challenging and you never give up on a person,” Strawberry said. “You never know who will recover given the chance and opportunity. DSRC provides both.”

DSRC currently operates a facility in St. Cloud. The DeLand facility at 2775 Big John Drive will be its second.

DSRC has a 28-day residential treatment program that treats addiction and all forms of substance abuse, including prescription medications, according to Oglethorpe CEO John Picciano.

“The purchase of the DeLand property was a response to a shortfall in Volusia County treatment beds due to the closure of Windward Behavioral Health coupled with the need for DSRC to expand its services in Central Florida,” Picciano added.
