Edgewater, FL – The dog that attacked a 4-year-old girl and 4 adults in Edgewater last weekend is deemed a dangerous dog and will be put down.
That’s the word from the City of Edgewater following the Sunday morning incident at a home on Marilyn Drive that say all 5 victims taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Edgewater Fire Department Captain Jill Danigel says the owner of the brindle-colored pit bull agreed to surrender the dog after leaving it in the care of a friend while on a trip out of state.
“The dog will remain within quarantine for 10 days and then be euthanized,” Danigel added. “The investigation is still ongoing as far as the actual circumstances of what happened that day.”
Citations against the owner are pending until the owner returns from her trip and speaks to Edgewater Animal Control officers, per Danigel.
Paramedics responded to the Marilyn Drive home around 9:15 AM that Sunday after getting a 911 call saying the dog bit the child and was trying to bite adults who were trying to get the child away from the dog.
Fire crews arriving at the scene found the dog in the back porch trying to bite the adults and had to hold the dog off using a fire hose and fire extinguisher until police arrived a few minutes later.
The incident report noted that the pit bull attacked a smaller dog after letting go of the girl’s arm and running off towards the front of the house.
An Edgewater police officer was able to secure the dog in the back of a patrol car and eventually took it to the Edgewater Animal Shelter, where it will remain until it’s euthanized.
