Orange City, FL – A suspect in the shooting of a man in front of an Orange City home this past summer is now in custody.
30-year-old Lawrence “Buster” Davis was booked on Tuesday at Volusia County Jail and is held without bond on charges of 1st-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted state felon.
The Orange City Police Department says it happened around 3:45 PM on June 25th near a residence on South Orange Avenue.
First responders found the victim lying on the ground in front of the home next to a silver passenger car with 2 gunshot wounds in his back and leg, per the arrest report. Paramedics took him to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for treatment.
Investigators say that car – a silver 2009 Toyota Corolla – had front-end damage and its airbags deployed, leading them to think it had been involved in an accident. There were also bullet holes in the front windshield and the dashboard, according to police.
OCPD also found another damaged vehicle – a white 4-door Nissan Altima – off the road near South Leavitt Avenue and Lakeview Avenue that may have been involved in the incident as well as shell casings and a chain that appeared to be made of gold near where the victim was shot, per the report.
The report also noted that officers found the Altima with the engine running, “heavy” damage to the passenger side and the airbags deployed. There was also a green pill bottle that officers think had crack cocaine inside.
Witnesses told OCPD a black man wearing a white tank top and shorts was last seen running away from the vehicle heading south on Leavitt.
Volusia County Jail records show Davis has been booked there 10 other times since August 2005, including most recently in July 2012 for various drug charges, driving under the influence and obstruction.
