Daytona Beach, FL – A long-running beef between former federal prison inmates ends with an arrest on numerous charges, including attempted murder.
46-year-old Emory Tellis of Daytona Beach is held without bond at Volusia County Jail following his arrest on New Year’s Eve by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office on charges of attempted murder, 2 counts of aggravated stalking, aggravated assault, criminal mischief and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
VCSO spokesman Andrew Gant says Tellis repeatedly went after a 48-year-old man and his wife with a gun.
“The recent violence began November 5th,” Gant stated. “Tellis hid outside [the victims’] residence on Forestwood Street and opened fire on [them]. The victims initially didn’t provide much cooperation in the case, but investigators soon learned that [they] were estranged due to an affair she had with Tellis.”
More shots rang out on Tuesday at the Forestwood Street home, with Tellis telling VCSO that the 48-year-old man had fired 3 shots at him. But investigators think it was the other way around, per Gant.
“At the scene of Tuesday’s shooting incident, investigators were able to view video surveillance of the prior shooting in November, including footage of Tellis holding a pistol,” Gant noted. “That footage contradicted Tellis’ earlier claim that he never had a gun that day.”
Deputies were again called out the following day after Tellis slashed the tires on the vehicle belonging to the man’s wife and then called her to admit it, according to Gant.
“He also threaten[ed] to burn down her house and business and kill her husband,” Gant noted. “Sheriff’s deputies monitored Tellis, who was spotted at the home later that night. They stopped him, and upon searching him, deputies found latex gloves in his back pocket.”
VCSO says more charges are expected as investigators wrap up their work on the case.
Tellis is currently on federal probation following a 2002 conviction for his role in a large cocaine distribution ring based in Daytona Beach.
